Carrot 180

Carrot 180

Another test of the extremes. No sidecut… no problem. Or so I thought…

On this build I was testing two concepts. Firstly I used a poly based fiberglass that is sprayed out flat and the strands are glued together into a sheet that looks like a kid who spilled their spaghetti. Contrasted to the fabric woven fiberglass used in the industry. The idea was that the ski could load up energy in all directions, vs traditional glass that had very obvious linear flex patterns. Turns out that part of the test worked just fine. The downside though was the weight. The fiberglass just soaked up about 50% more epoxy and added all that weight. Since weight is always a priority this glass schedule is gonna stay where it belongs, making boats not skis.

The second test concept was to see if a wedge shaped ski would work at all. In theory it would allow the tip to float and tail to sink in any type of soft snow condition maybe making pow skiing a bit easier to float and tips that were a bit more trust worthy in the deep stuff. That aspect of the idea worked just fine. In the pow was the only place these guys functioned at all unfortunately. There is always a trade off for amazing pow float it seems. As soon as these skis hit a groomer they took you where ever they happened to be pointing. Nearly unturnable, unreliable, and inconsistent. Making them horrible skis to take to a resort. On the wall they went. Another lesson learned. I did kinda like how cool the asymmetrical tips turned out though.
